s021116 City School BoardFebruary 11, 2016 -- Special Joint Meeting with the Asheboro City Board of Education The Randolph County Board of Commissioners met in special joint session with the Asheboro City Board of Education at 6:00 p.m. in the Professional Development Center, on the corner of Church Street and Walker Avenue on the Asheboro High School campus, Asheboro. Commissioners Frye, Kemp, Lanier, Haywood and Allen were present. Also present were County Manager Hal Johnson; Finance Officer Will Massie; County Staff Attorney Aimee Scotton; Amanda Varner, Clerk to the Board; Dana Crisco, Deputy Clerk to the Board; and members of the Asheboro City Board of Education and school officials, Superintendent Dr. Terry Worrell, Kyle Lamb, Phillip Cheek, Gustavo Agudelo, Linda Cranford, Baxter Hammer, Joyce Harrington, Gidget Kidd, Beth Knott, Jeni Martin, Archie Priest, Jr., Michael B. Smith and other school officials; Finance Officer Harold Blair, Director of Facilities and Maintenance Michael Mize, and Executive Assistant to the Superintendent Patsy Nichols. School Board Chairman Kyle Lamb welcomed the Commissioners and Chairman Frye called the meeting to order for the County. Mr. Mize presented a power point presentation which gave updates on the maintenance work included in the ten-year plan that was completed during the previous summer. This included roof replacements, duct work installation, painting, and HVAC installation. Next, he outlined the capital needs for 2015-16; Roofing sections at NAMS, SAMS, Loflin, and the Central Office, mechanical units in the Media Center and the Office at McCrary and the Office at Lindley Park, painting and flooring at Lindley Park, the intercom at NAMS, the fire alarm at Balfour, the chiller at Balfour, and plumbing and masonry repairs system wide. The total of those needs was estimated at $880,126. With the annual Capital Outlay of $700,000 allocated to construction/renovation, there would be a shortage of $180,126. Mr. Mize continued his presentation with the funding estimates for the 2016-17 year in the amount of $868,624 as follows: five HVAC units, asbestos removal in the air handler, and painting all at NAMS; roofing and windows at SAMS; and roofing, the Office mechanical unit, insulation in the gym, and waterproofing the stadium masonry at the High School. He concluded by thanking the Commissioners for their assistance for so many years. Mr. Frye commended Mr. Mize and his staff on the upkeep and pride that they took in the facilities. He said newer schools in other counties that he had visited looked older than the Asheboro City school buildings because they were not as well kept. Elizabeth Pack, Agriscience/Environmental & Natural Resources/Horticulture teacher at the Asheboro City School's Zoo School, thanked both Boards for the opportunity for the student leaders of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter to speak about their club. Ms. Pack is also the school's FFA chapter advisor. Some of the members explained the mission statement of the FFA; Premier Leadership, Personal Growth, and Career Success. They also shared some of their experiences and growth because of their involvement in FFA. Members of both Boards congratulated the group on their success and encouraged their continued involvement in the community. 2/11/16 Adiournment At 7:05 p.m., on motion of Allen, seconded by Kemp, the Board voted unanimously to adjourn.
