concerning the County Road Naming Project to listen
to the suggestions (for road names) of the citizens
of the southeast quadrant of the County (South of
. . Highway 64/East of Business Highway 220) . Craven

once all the Community meetings were over the

for a list of recommendations to be presented to
the Board of County Commissioners who will make
final decisions after Public Hearings expected to
be conducted in April, 1989 . Johnson opened the
• meeting for. suggestions.

be named after his brother, Walter Dewey
Staley, who was killed in Service. Staley
stated that this development and part of the

known as Highway 13 for over 50 years.
E: Linda Jones , Route 4, Asheboro, (of the
Grantville Community) recommended that SR 2835
be named Ross Harris Road, because this was
her father that had worked for the DOT for 40
years and this road is named this on several
County maps .

name came from the hill cover in pine trees
located on this road. Sides presented the
Board with a petition of 39 signatures.

that SR 2612 be named Burnice N. Cox road,

2382 be named Carl Cox Road, because his
father owns the majority of the land on this
road and was a Veteran.
0: Paul Allred, Asheboro, recommended that SR
2605 be named Pugh Balifield Road, because the
road was commonly known by this name and he
felt this would be easier for the Emergency
Services than to have to memorize new road
names .
P: Claude Coltrane, Route 2, Ramseur, recommended
that SR 2633 be named Coltrane Road or the
Claude Coltrane road. Coltrane described the
road as being 1 .1 miles long and dirt with
only 3 families living on the road. Coltrane
humorously added that he operated a lawn mower
repair shop on this road and this would keep
him from putting up signs to advertise if the
County put up a road sign with his name on it.
0: James Canoy, Ramseur , Columbia Township,
recommended that SR 2627 be named the Roby Coe
Road or Coe Road, because Mr . Coe is the

this road longer than any other resident.
Canoy presented the Board with a petition with
27 signatures.

mended that SR 2914 be named Rainbow Loop.
Chriscoe stated that this was a short road and

be named Buffalo Ford Road, because this is
the name she has heard it referred to for
several years .

Department, recommended that SR 1003 be named
the Erect Road, SR 2642 be called Rock Quary
Road, SR 2873 be named River Road, and SR 2890
be named Tower Road.
One gentleman expressed his opinion that if a
continuous road has two State Road numbers it
should still have just one name to help eliminate
any confusion.
Another gentleman of the audience stated that it
was his understanding that this Road Naming Project
would eliminate the road numbering system. Hal
Johnson, Planning Director explained that it would
not replace the numbers because that system is a
State-wide program provided by the Department of
Transportation (DOT) .
W: Anna Hodgin, Asheboro, asked to address the
Board again and recommended that SR 2657 be
