RANDOLPH COUNTY PLANNING BOARD
January 17 , 1989
There was a special meeting of the Randolph County
Planning Board on Tuesday, January 17 , 1989, at 7 : 00 p.m. , in
Courtroom B, Randolph County Courthouse, 145 Worth Street,
Asheboro, North Carolina. The following Planning Board
members were present at this hearing: Doyle Stout, Chairman;
Lynden Craven, Vice Chairman; Charles Adams; Ray Farlow; Guy
Troy; and Arlie Culp, Alternate.
1. Doyle Stout, Chairman, called the meeting to Order
at 7 : 00 p.m.
2. Hal Johnson, Planning Director , welcomed and
thanked the citizens (of the North east Quadrant of
Randolph County - North of Highway 64/East of
Business Highway 220) for their participation in
Randolph County Road Naming Project. Johnson
explained that the County Planning Department has
received approximately 100 petitions for road name
suggestions at this time. Johnson explained that
once all the Community meetings were over (this
week) the Planning Staff would put the information
together for a list of recommendations to be
presented to the Board of County Commissioners who
will make final decisions after Public Hearing
expected to be conducted in April, 1989 . Johnson
opened the meeting for suggestions.
A: Barry Cox, Route 3 , Liberty, requested that
the private drive (he resides on) be changed
from Edgar Drive to Cox Lane. Cox stated that
a written petition was on file in the Planning
Department.
B: Rachel Teague Fesmire, resident of SR 2475,
recommended that SR 2475 be named J. C. Teague
Road. Fesmire stated that ten members of the
Teague Family resides on this road and have
since 1903 . J. C. Teague built the road and
the bridge on this road (originally) .
C: Ann Owens, resident of SR 2101, suggested that
SR 2101 be named Branson Mill Road. Owens
• stated that this road has been known for over
100 years as this and the section (of the
road) located in Guilford County is named
Branson Mill Road. Owens stated that a
petition for this road name was on file with
the Planning Department.
D: Elsie Johnson, resident of SR 2137 , requested
that SR 2137 and SR 2136 (the paved part) be
considered one road and be named Johnson - May
Road. Johnson added that if this was not
possible then her recommendation for SR 2137
would be Elsie Inn because she worked so hard
and was very instrumental in having this road
paved.
E: George Gregson, resident of SR 2105, requested
that SR 2105 be named Gregson Road or George
• Gregson Road. Gregson described the road as a
dead end road and 3 of 4 families on this road

are Gregsons . Gregson owns 3/4 of the right
of way of this road.
F: David Hagley, resident of SR 2454, suggested
that SR 2454 be named Old Brower Mill Road.
because it has been called this for years.
Hagley stated that a petition was on file with
the County Planning Department.
G: Les Brown, resident of SR 2113, suggested that
SR 2113 be named the Lester Brown Road, after
his father , because his father was instru-
mental in getting the road paved. Brown added
that a petition was on file with the Planning
Department.
H: Ann Weeks, resident of SR 2141, requested that
SR 2141 be named the Roy Davis Road. Weeks
added that a petition was on file with the
Planning Department.
I : Margaret Wicker Anderson, resident of SR 2144,
requested that SR 2144 be named Wicker Road or
Mahlon Wicker Road (after her father) because
Wicker was instrumental (in 1932) in building
this road. Wicker donated the white flint
(from his farm) for the foundation of this
road. Wicker was also instrumental (in 1948)
in having the road paved. This road absorbed
approximately 1/2 mile of his farmland.
J: Otis Bowers, resident of SR 2125, requested
that SR 2125 be named Otis Bowers Lane because
in 1913 his father bought the family farm
(located on this road) and the land is still
with the family.
K: Hope Phillips, resident of SR 2148, suggested
that SR 2148 be named Phillips Road or
Talmadge Phillips Road because Mr . Phillips
gave up the land for the road and several
Phillips still reside on this road.
L: Donald Lineberry, resident of SR 2445,
suggested that SR 2445 be named the Benny
Lineberry Road or Lineberry Road. Lineberry
has 3 sons still living on this road.
Lineberry added that a petition was on file
with the Planning Department.
M: Marie Kearns, resident of SR 2472, requested
that SR 2472 be named Shady Grove Church Road.
Kearns stated that this church is located in
the center section of this road.
N: Doug Routh, resident of SR 2438, spoke for the
residences and businesses of SR 2438, and
asked that this road be named Willard Road
because it has been known as this for over 50
years. Routh stated that a petition was on
file with the Planning Department.
0: William Langley, resident of SR 2471, request-
ed that SR 2471 be named Langley Road or
William Langley Road. Langley stated that
this road has been called Langley Road for
over 100 years and that he owns 3/4 mile of
right of way on this road. Langley presented
the Board with a petition for this road name.
P: J. Gary Nixon, resident of Hidden Forest
Subdivision (in Level Cross Township, off of
SR 2102) , recommended that the streets in this
subdivision remain named as they were platted
in 1954.

Q: Marvin Lineberry, resident of SR 1006 , recom-
mended that SR 1006 be named the Old Greens-
boro Highway as it has been called for years.
R: Mickey Walker, resident of SR 2137 , recommend-
ed that this road be named Country Lane or
Cedar Berry Lane or Hickory Nut Lane or
Hawksview Road. Walker presented a petition
with 30 signatures to the Planning Board.
S: Sylvan Routh, Route 1, Franklinville, request-
ed that SR 2448 be named Routh Road, because
his Grandfather settled here in the early
1900 ' s. Routh stated that this road is also
named Routh Road on the County maps.
T: Clifton Foust, resident of SR 2438, recommend-
ed that this road be named Foust Road or Lacy
Foust Road, because his father lived on this
road for 85 years and his mother and father
before him.
U: Bertha Curtis Wood, resident of SR 2518,
requested that SR 2518 be named Curtis Drive
or Lydia Lane because this is her old home
place and more than a mile of road frontage of
this dirt dead end road is owned by Curtis ' _
V: Tura Mane, resident of Forest Wood Subdivi-
sion, requested that SR 1985 be named Forest
Drive or Forest Wood Drive and SR 1986 be
named Dogwood Lane.
W: Floyd Langley, resident of Staley, requested
that SR 2468 be named Zion Church Road because
it is the only Church on the road. Langley
added that 2/3 of the road is located in
Chatham County (this is the name of the
portion of the road in Chatham) and 1/3 of the
road is located in Randolph County.
X: Donald Ferree, resident of Climax, requested
that SR 2105 be named Ferree Dairy Road
because during the Depression his grandfather
bought a farm on this road and the land is
still in the Ferree name.
Y: Clifton Foust asked to address the Board again
for his mother to request that SR 2436 be
named Ed Wall. Road or Ed Wall Lane. Wall' s
brother and sister still live on the road and
the Wall' s have lived on this road for years.
Z: Geraldine White, resident of SR 2109 , request-
ed that this road be named Hunting Lodge Road
because the section (of this road) located in
Guilford County is named this and the road
begins at J.P. Morgan' s Hunting Lodge.
AA: Geraldine White asked to address the Board
again and recommended that SR 2114 remain
Providence Church Road because it has been
known as such for years.
BB: Barry Ellis, resident of SR 2138, asked the
Board if the dead end section of this road
would be named the same as the rest of the
road and he was answered yes.
CC: Donald Martin, resident of SR 2410, recommend-
ed that this road be named Martin' s Ranch Road
because of his plans to build and ranch with
stables for riding horses.

DD: Chris York, resident of SR 2476, described
this road as 1 3/4 miles long and stated that
he owned approximately 1 mile of the road
frontage. York recommended that this road be
named Von York Road as is on most County maps ..
EE: Clifton Foust, asked to address the Board
�-- again, requested that SR 2459 be called Mount
Pleasant - Sandy Creek Church Road because of
the churches on each ends of the road.
3 . The Community meeting adjourned at 7 : 46 p.m.
