c050508Closed Session —May 5, 2008 At 5:25 p.m., the Board adjourned to closed session to consider the qualifications, competence, performance, condition of appointment of a public officer or employee or prospective public officer or employee, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(6). Commissioners Holmes, Kemp, Frye, Lanier and Haywood were present initially. Later in the closed session, County Attorney Alan Pugh and County Manager Richard Wells were present. The Board discussed the resignation of County Attorney Alan Pugh effective as of the June Commissioners meeting. The reason he gave for resigning was due to the increasing demands for services and the costs associated with them; he believed these services could be met more cost- effectively by a full time in-house County Attorney rather than one engaged in private practice, and offered this as his parting advice to the Board. The Board accepted Mr. Pugh's resignation and decided that Aimee Scotton, Associate County Attorney, would assume the duties performed by the County Attorney temporarily until a new County Attorney is appointed. At 6:05 p.m., on motion of Haywood, seconded by Frye, the Board voted unanimously to end closed session and return to regular session. J. Harold Holmes, Chairman Phil Kemp Arnold Lanier Darrell L. Frye, Vice Chairman Stan Haywood Cheryl A. Ivey, Clerk to the Board
